Valentine’s Day Repercussions...
We all dread that day. The 14th February!
The day we look back and discuss with our mates every possible means of ignoring that space in time where we begin to repeat memories of watching ‘You’ve got mail’. Alone. How we spent hours mulling over which colour roses to buy from Tesco metro or the time we revealed to that sexy someone that you had saved the last rolo chocolate for them! Only for it to have ended a week later, with a bitter taste of valentines still left hanging over like the grey clouds looming outside the office window.
To be honest I’m not much of a valentines fan, in fact there is one story in particular that is pretty cringe worthy...
After countless attempts at writing the perfect phase within a heavily decorated forever friends card, I proceeded to write the words "To Bob…"
The next move was near impossible to jot down without sounding ‘cheesy’, so I scribbled “I just wanted to let you know that you’re a great guy and wondered if…” Wait for it! “… you wanted to go out with me?” AAHHHHH! If only I’d known at age 13 that this was just NOT the done thing. As you can imagine this didn’t go so well. To my horror Bob read the valentines card aloud in front of all his mates and he laughed, lots. Me on the other hand was left sobbing into Kleenex tissues, only revealing my face to indulge on an extra large tub of Haagen-dazs strawberry cheesecake ice-cream.
Now some would question ‘Is it a good idea to send valentines cards at all…shouldn’t you just be honest with someone you fancy?’ I would say that sending the card in the first place takes guts, this comes from a desire to show someone your appreciation whether that be to a partner, girl/boyfriend, your mates, your mum! I think the motive behind the action is what counts, just make sure that your reasons for sending the card are not a cop out for actually telling that person you care for them!
Jesus reveals the Father’s love for us, that Love in all its shapes and sizes are fashioned from the very being of who God is. All He asks is that we, as neighbours in Christ, re-present this love to others. We know this to be true when He says"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (NIV, John 13:34-35) I’m sure we can all learn a thing or two about loving those around us, without the need for gaining something in return, a simple blessing.
On DivineMatch you’ll find plenty of opportunity to build friendships…maybe not‘forever friends’ ones, like my Valentines day card experience would picture. Though this is the place to get comfortable and start making connections! So why not take this a leap and send ‘that person’ (you know… the one you’ve saved on your favourites and keep clicking on their profile!!) a smile or gift option like a ‘Yellow Daisy’ to brighten the day.
I encourage you to go ahead and break the ice, introduce yourself to someone you don’t know on DivineMatch with the simple intention of just blessing a neighbour. I’m sure they won’t bite… and who knows you might just get a reply! :o)
